What are the aims of this course?

On this course you will gain the practical skills required for vehicle maintenance and repair principals. It will also provide you with the knowledge requirements for related courses you could progress onto such as Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQ) and forms the knowledge component of the IMI SSC Maintenance and Repair Apprenticeship framework (for Light Vehicle).

As well as the topics covered below, maths and English are a considerable part of the course and will also need to be completed.

This course covers:

- Understanding the retail automotive maintenance and repair industry
- Understanding spark ignition engine systems, components and operation
- Understanding compression ignition engine systems, components and operation
- Understanding steering and suspension systems components and maintenance (4 wheels or more)
- Understanding vehicle braking systems components and maintenance
- Understanding vehicle wheels and tyre construction and maintenance
- Understanding vehicle exhaust systems components and maintenance
- Understanding low carbon technologies in the automotive industry
- Understanding vehicle electrical foundation skills
- Understanding light vehicle construction
- Understanding how to remove and replace light vehicle electrical units and components
- Understanding how to remove and replace light vehicle chassis units and components
- Understanding inspection, repair and replacement of high performance light vehicle tyres

What qualifications do I need to do this course?

New Entrants: 4 GCSE A* - C grades including English and maths and a successful admissions interview. Once on programme an aptitude and skill s assessment will be completed to ensure you are enrolled on the appropriate course. Progressing students: Successful completion of the Level 1 course & functional skills qualifications, and a minimum attendance of 75%

How is the course assessed?

The course will be assessed through question papers, practical assessments and written assignments

Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles

What will I be able to go on to do after I've completed this course?

This qualification will give you the opportunity to progress onto higher level qualifications in automotive and engineering related subjects such as the IMIAL Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles.

What are the career opportunities?

On successful completion of this course you could go on to work within the retail motor industry as a light vehicle service technician or onto an Apprenticeship in light vehicle maintenance and repair (as a recognised knowledge qualification within the IMI Maintenance and Repair Apprenticeship Framework).
