What are the aims of this course?

This course is designed to provide you with the knowledge and practical skills to enable you to carry out basic repairs and maintenance procedures to light vehicles in the realistic working environment of our well-equipped automotive workshops. The Manchester College has links with many organisations in the motor industry, from household names to local employers.

How long is the course?

One year.

What are the areas covered by this course?

Mandatory units:
- Health and safety practices in vehicle maintenance
- Tools, equipment and materials for vehicle maintenance

Optional units include:
- Spark ignition and compression ignition fuel systems
- Engine liquid cooling and lubrication systems
- Steering and suspension systems
- Vehicle braking systems
- Vehicle wheels and tyres
- Vehicle exhaust systems
- Vehicle electrical foundation skills
- Vehicle lighting systems
- Vehicle body repair practices and procedures
- Preparation prior to paint refinishing

What qualifications do I need to do this course?

No formal qualifications are required, however, you will need a positive attitude, commitment and self-motivation. The course is designed for school leavers who are able to work at a level that is equivalent to GCSE grades D-F. Entry level courses are also available for those who want to progress to a level 1 qualification but do not yet meet these requirements.

How is the course assessed?

The course has a practical approach to assessment and includes visual questioning techniques, oral examination and practical demonstration.

Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the IMI Level 1 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance. You will also have the opportunity to complete Functional Skills that will help develop important skills - like communication, team working, presentation, and problem solving.

What will I be able to go on to do after I've completed this course?

On successful completion of the course you can progress onto an IMI Level 2 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or Vehicle Body and Paint Operations. Advice on opportunities for further study will be provided during your course.

What are the career opportunities?

This course can lead to a career as a motor vehicle body repairer/refinisher/builder or a motor vehicle mechanic/technician. Specialist careers advice will be available from our Advice and Guidance Team throughout your course.
