Vocational study not leading to a recognised qualification,

What's the Computer Aided Design for Architecture course about?

This course is aimed at those who want to gain CAD and BIM (building information modelling) skills in preparation for architectural and construction careers and further education.

Entry level to intermediate experienced AutoCAD users wanting to gain qualifications in those skills as well as developing relevant BIM skills as part of professional development in architecture, interiors or construction.

This course aims to enable you to
- Use CAD hardware and software safely in the workplace
- Produce accurate 2D detailed drawings in a timely manner.
- Edit and modify existing CAD drawings efficiently.
- Produce hard copies with appropriate and clear annotations to accurate scales.
- Use BIM software to create, detail and specify an architectural project from site grids and elevations through to documentation and presentations.

This course covers:
2D Computer Aided Design (Level 2)

- Use associated IT, CAD hardware and operating system
- Use basic file management techniques and maintain health and safety requirements
- Use and identify key components of the software relating to the 2D drawing environment
- Use a range of viewing commands and set up the drawing space¿- Use drawing commands to produce shapes
- Use the CAD software's co-ordinate system to aid accurate drawing
- Use hatch, text and simple dimensioning routines
- Use basic editing commands and produce simple hard copies

2D Computer Aided Design (Level 3)

- Use a layering system and different line type styles
- Define and use a system for grouping objects to form blocks or libraries
- Produce isometric drawings within the 2D environment
- Define and use an adjustable co-ordinate system based on user requirements
- Use complex dimensioning routines
- Use different drawing spaces
- Produce hard copies of drawings
- Make inquiries of an existing drawing and place reference points
- Use a means of pre-command object selection in order to carry out editing processes
- Change the properties of a number of drawn entities
- Edit blocks/symbols and hatched areas
- Modify continuous lines formed by a connected sequence of lines or arcs (polylines)
- Use a method to remove unused items and rename other items logically

Revit Architecture (BIM)

- What is BIM? (Building Information Modeling)
- The Revit software interface
- Starting a project
- Fundamentals of the building model
- Loading additional building components
- Viewing the building model (2D/3D)
- Working with dimensions and constraints
- Developing and modifying building models
- Detailing and drafting
- Construction documentation
- Presentation (rendering and walkthrough videos of projects)

Each City & Guilds unit will be assessed by two assignments covering practical skills and one GOLA online test covering underpinning knowledge

What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?

Learners can progress onto further BIM programmes such as Revit Architecture Advanced or BIM management courses (Navisworks Manage). Learners can also progress to university degree courses in BIM, Architecture, and Interior Design.

What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?

All learners must have access to a computer suitable for CAD software to carry out home study whilst on the programme. Applicants must be computer literate and have an understanding of basic 2D drawings

Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the Computer Aided Design for Architecture course?

On successful completion of this course you will be awarded three individual units; 2D AutoCad level 2, 2D AutoCad level 3 and Revit Fundamentals.
